Dyrham Park Mansion is a Grade 1 Listed Baroque Mansion that required a full overhaul of the house roof, orangery, and servicing requirements. Taking in to account the Trust’s desire to mitigate the projected fall in visitor numbers during any building work, visitor experience formed a significant element of work. A vast promenade was created at roof level, with lifts to enable unencumbered access to all, allowed visitors to view the building and repair work, and pushed visitor numbers up by 30%. The mansard roofs to the East, West, North and Central ranges were all stripped and re-covered. Whilst the enormous enveloping scaffold was in place, drainage details were resolved, and essential repairs to the ashlar stonework, balustrades, cornices, urns, and the West Balcony were carried out. A new-build biomass unit created within the Grade II* Listed parkland gives full conservation heating. To further increase energy performance, whilst the roof was stripped, the thermal performance of the roof’s insulation and ventilation was increased.
