Whitehall Farm is a Grade II listed farm house on the north Norfolk coast which had suffered from various mid-C20th alterations and extensions of very indifferent quality. It had been tanked inside and painted with impermeable masonry paint which had resulted in severe dampness. It is located on the edge of a flood plane on the north Norfolk coast and within an Area of Outstanding Natural Beauty and SSSI. The oldest parts of the house are believed to date back to the C17th. The proposal sought to repair the house by stripping off the C20th layers and repairing traditionally so that the house could breathe again. The worst of the C20th additions were taken down and replaced by a new family room extension to the house supported by the building of two new outbuildings which enhanced the sense of enclosure and place in the existing walled gardens. As north Norfolk is rich in local materials, brick and stone, the new additions sought to make the most of these within a new vernacular interpretation. With an upgrading of an existing side drive, the north side became the new main entrance front to the house, preserving the garden beyond the walls to the south a much more private existence. Having made this change, the relationship of the south facing rooms was enhanced by a new garden designed by Tom Stuart Smith to create a spectacular setting for the house.
