Alteration to existing property
The extension and reconfiguration of a semi-detached 1920s home in Barnet maximises natural light, generosity of space, and the connection to the expansive south-facing garden. Recently purchased by a young family, the brief called for the reworking of the existing ground floor layout, where there was a lack of connectivity between the kitchen, living and dining spaces, and also an underused garage. The existing house had remained unchanged for many years, providing us with the opportunity to retain many original features whilst upgrading the spatial arrangement and building fabric to suit modern living. The original kitchen and dining spaces at the rear of the house were knocked through and a new dining room extension added to the back of the house, creating a series of flexible and connected informal living spaces. By extending across only part of the width of the house, we were able to create an external ‘courtyard’ area, providing a sheltered outside zone for seating, play and socialising. The existing garage space was converted for use as a utility room and home office, and the heating and electric systems upgraded throughout. Photography: © Chris Snook
