Our proposal is a crafted brick-clad extension that enhances the original brick detailing of the house. Large sliding doors open onto a flush sunken patio at Lower Ground Floor Level. The roof is cantilevered over the glass and the overhang is detailed in a single oversized linear ‘brick-and-a-half’ lintel. The thick lintel reinforces the perceived mass of the roof as a counterpoint to the thin framed sliding glass doors and large oversized roof light. The ground plane has been excavated as low as possible whilst avoiding internal underpinning. This is continued externally to create a semi-submerged courtyard that captures the Southerly light whilst retaining privacy. The new retaining walls are clad in the same dark brickwork, this continues internally to the flank wall which further blurs the threshold from inside to outside.
