To increase the footprint of the Discovery Centre and allow for the inclusion of the local Tourist Information Centre within the building, the Trustees commissioned PPIY to create an infill extension to the external passage at the side of the building. This strategy was identified in our earlier feasibility study for the site. To resolve the complicated roof structure within the constraints of the site we used 3D building modelling software to generate and test the roof design in 3D. The window openings in the gable of the building and the levels of the adjacent boundary wall informed the geometry of the roof’s undulating planes which maximise the available internal ceiling height. Frameless glazing defines the front elevation of the new extension, creating a welcoming, open setting and maintaining a clear distinction between the new and the old. Internally the muted palette of birch plywood and limewashed stone walls lit by modern LED light fittings provides a relaxed and warm environment. The project was in part funded by the LEADER programme.
