Friargate Meeting House, York - Phase Two Works Friends Meeting House is used by The Religious Society of Friends or Quakers. The Meeting House is in the heart of York, near the City Centre and not far from Clifford's Tower but within a challenging and restricted site. As well as being used as a Meeting House by the Quakers it is also a popular with many other groups who rent the rooms. PPIY architects had master-planned the new works for the Meeting House to provide a phased development to allow the premises to remain open during the works. The Client's business lettings timetable was also an additional and important constraint. These Phase Two works are for internal alterations and a brand new First Floor extension. The new First Floor extension was built on top of existing Ground Floor accommodation foot print. Firstly a special scaffold was erected complete with temporary roof to keep the site dry, then the old roof was removed and the new First Floor built over using timber frame construction, all under the 'umbrella' of the temporary scaffold roof. Internally on the Ground Floor; the foyer was extended by removing a wall and the rooms beneath the new First Floor refurbished. The existing WC's were replaced and the flooring throughout the foyer was replaced. Finally the lift and stairs installed during Phase One were connected to the new First Floor accommodation, as planned Skilfull planning and co-ordination by the Client, Design Team and Contractor ensured a successful project, built on a tight timescale and delivered on time.
