The redevelopment of Halsey House was completed in three phases while maintaining occupancy of the home throughout. The Danbury unit provides accommodation for sixteen residents and is designed with ‘best practice' principles for Dementia Care. The single storey design incorporates a secure accessible courtyard garden that provides simple walks, with raised and sensory beds, quiet seating and dining areas. In addition to the en-suite bedrooms, the residents enjoy the use of a quiet lounge, tranquil room, activities room, dinning room and a combined kitchen dining room for resident and visitor use. The corridors incorporate seating areas that provide a destination and rest stop for the residents. The Danbury unit also includes assisted and full staff facilities. The new wing replaced a 1970’s non-compliant wing at Halsey House. The new design provides sixty en-suite bedrooms and includes a specification of accommodation similar to that of the Danbury unit. There are also a number of garden and courtyard spaces. Portess and Richardson received the 'Best Restotation/Extension of a Care Home' at the Pinders Healtcare Design Awards 2011.
