Pope Priestley Architects were successful with the design submissions to Southampton city council, for three regeneration areas. to bring new life to some of the city’s run-down housing estates. Redevelopment proposals for existing council owned blocks at Laxton Close, Sholing; Meggeson Avenue, Townhill Park; and Exford Drive, Harefield have been completed to provide over 200 new homes. PPA are responsible for the design proposals prepared for developer client Lovell and First Wessex, working in partnership with Southampton City Council. The winning scheme was selected following a rigorous selection process including presentations to community groups and design review panels. The last of the three projects to start on site is at Exford Drive, Hareford in the eastern suburb of the city. The scheme proposal comprised 127 houses and apartments with 50% of the units allocated as affordable, together with a local centre containing four units providing retail facilities to the local community. The design concept was to respond to the character and context of the site and the surrounding area, to create a contemporary design that, makes appropriate references to the local vernacular including the post war buildings on and around the site. To create a clear separation between private and public realms, continuous, articulated perimeter block are formed visually punctuated by variation in height and frontages. The lower rise houses and apartments are located in the more elevated parts of the site with the taller 4-6 storey buildings on the lower slopes adjacent to the large scale existing trees.
