The Old Malthouse was refurbished as part of Oswestry's Township Heritage initiative. As one of Oswestry's most significant historic buildings, Oswestry District Council were keen to encourage its refurbishment, especially as the proposed plans afforded potential for increased employment. Prior to its restoration both the upper floors and the basement were inhabitable and the middle floor was only used for storage. The owner occupied the rear Gas hall where he ran a cabinet makers. The 12 months refurbishment project saw the overhauling of the roof, the restoration of the 17th Century windows and shutters, repair of stonework detailing and general brickwork repairs. Internally the basement floor was lowered to provide a working height and the building was fire engineered by providing new staircases thus allowing full occupancy of the upper floors. The building now houses in the basement, an exhibition space; on the ground floor a web design company and the upper floors a property management company in addition, by a process of rationalisation and space maximization the cabinet makers occupy the Gas hall and the refurbished outlying outbuildings. The project was awarded both a civic society award and Green Apple Awards for its design restoration and community excellence
