The project involved the extension, and remodelling of a 1930's semi detached London home. The design brief was for a reconfiguration and full refurbishment of a modest semi detached house. Following design reviews with their architect, the clients decided to proceed with a layout which completely reconfigured the rear of the house to provide a contemporary open plan flexible family space, with a reconfigured master bedroom suite with new rear terrace and fully refurbished interiors. The new kitchen and family space had wide sliding aluminium framed glass doors inserted to the rear terrace to provide a seamless transition to the terrace and garden, maximise light and emphasise the natural width of the site. A two storey extension was also added to allow for study and utility accommodation to the side. Different areas within the kitchen and family space were further articulated through the installation of feature rooflights to the flat roof, a carefully crafted ceiling and lighting design and the selection of a limited palette of materials. Sustainable features within the design included high performance thermal insulation to new building elements being designed to exceed building regulations for extensions, the insertion of high specification glazing and low energy and concealed lighting through key areas. The clients worked closely with the builder, building control officers, architect and wider project team to obtain the necessary planning and building approvals, and successfully transform a tired house. The end result is one which seamlessly blends and contrasts traditional features with the new, and the creation of a modern and contemporary family home full of light detail and character.
