Platform 5 Architects are working with London Square to design 63 high-quality apartments on the historic Toynbee Hall Estate in Whitechapel. The housing forms part of the masterplan for the site that includes the internal restoration of the Grade 2 listed Toynbee Hall and the replacement of the unsympathetic extensions to its side and rear. A new five storey office building at 36 Commercial Street will form a backdrop for the major public realm improvements to the front of Toynbee Hall where the landscaped public square will be raised up to street level. Our approach is informed by the rich heritage of Toynbee Hall and the organisation’s work in the east end. The landscaping of the public realm will be improved whilst the new building forms make reference to the robust brick warehouses lining Commercial Street up to Spitalfields. This project is our first with London Square and is being developed in collaboration with David Hughes Architects.
