Southwark

£10m to £49.99M
Alteration to existing property, Brownfield site, New Build
The transformation of Southwark College completed in 2017, delivering modern, industry-ready learning spaces while the campus stayed fully operational throughout the build. From a £40 million+ redevelopment spanning 14,100 m², crafted with Richard Hopkinson Architects and Platform 5 Architects, the project turned a dated collection of buildings into a bold educational flagship. Phase 1 stripped back the outdated structures facing The Cut and introduced a striking new entrance and glazed foyer, turning a hidden courtyard into a spacious arrival area, café and flexible open-learning hub. Existing teaching zones were refurbished and re-organised to deliver high quality rooms and smarter circulation. Phase 2 delivered a six-storey landmark building dedicated to the media and creative industries, seamlessly linking with the refreshed Phase 1 fabric. At its core sits a transparent central atrium with flexible learning space. Terraces and breakout spaces wrap the design, embodying a fresh approach to teaching and student life. Every element of the redevelopment, from the bold entrance on The Cut to the specialist studios and open-plan learning zones, signals an institution re-imagined for the future.
