The Old School House is a Grade II listed two storey house. The brief was to design a simple structure to protect the back door from the worst of the weather and for it to be big enough to include table and chairs from which to enjoy the garden. It was conceived early on as a 'pavilion' and this helped inform all later design decisions. It was constrained by existing eaves heights, neighbouring windows, overlooking from visitors to the pub next door and the compact size of the garden. The proposal includes a separate 'garden room' linked to the house with a porch. The lead roof porch creates a link between old and new and is sympathetic to the roof heights and materials on the existing building. The materials used in cladding the porch include slate hanging and lead. The garden room roof is covered with an extensive sedum-blanket green roof as a pitched roof was thought to add too much volume to limited space. The timber weatherboarding was used to clad the garden room inside and out. The glazing is aluminium framed. Photographs - copyright Graham Gaunt Photowork.
