The Tavistock Museum is in the listed Guildhall Square. The entrance and exhibition areas occupied only two rooms above the historic archway but in 2006 took over the linked cottage as an extension. This enabled a scheme of improvements to be prepared for providing access and facilities for wheelchair users and the elderly on the ground floor. The scheme of fundraising by the Museum allowed the work to be carried out in phases and involved the Town Council landlord and West Devon Borough Council. Phase 1 was the construction of an accessible entrance approach and repairs to the cottage involving timber windows and masonry repairs to the external fabric and forming a doorway to the link at first floor level. Phase 2 work involved the redecoration and repairs to lime plaster and partition removal to create an Interpretation Room and entrance welcome area, upgrading the lighting and fire protection and fitting out with a reception desk and DVC equipment. Phase 3 are planned repairs to a paved garden to the rear courtyard. Photographs - Copyright Graham Gaunt Photowork.
