In 2011, Next plc embarked on a programme of new-build and refurbishment schemes throughout the UK. Pick Everard was appointed to provide a full multi-disciplinary design service, including architectural, civil and structural design to support their ambitions. Innovative construction methods were employed on the design of both the building and the car park, to improve both the build programme and sustainability. The prominent site is viewed and approached from all sides by both vehicles and pedestrians. This, and the LA's requirement for 'active frontages' and a 'legible relationship' with its surroundings, meant that we needed to create additional shop fronts with entrances on two facades over two levels. The use of extensive glazing and pedestrian linkages from the surrounding area, along with strong structural landscaping enlivened the building.
