The £31 million project comprises of a new build, two storey, 3 form entry Primary and Secondary SEN School totalling 9657m² (GIFA) on land currently defined as ‘Playing Field’ to the rear of the existing Marjory Kinnon SEN School, which is shared use with the neighbouring Bedfont Primary School. The ‘land swap’ approach along with physical constraints found on site present challenging phasing and logistical issues that must be considered during the construction phase. The new facility will accommodate 288 pupils in 36 general classrooms, with additional specialist class bases in Science, Art, Food Technology, ICT and Music. These main teaching spaces are then supported by a series of One to One rooms and a mixture of flexible Therapy rooms that can be equipped with sensory technologies that aid in the development of teaching and learning across the age range. At the heart of the building and positioned within the shared area that separates the Primary and Secondary wings is the timber clad Assembly Hall. This is then wrapped by a double height circulation space with first floor balconies, forming an indoor social hub space and focal point from which pupils and staff can orientate around the building.
