P+HS was appointed to provide architectural services for a £30m redevelopment project by the charity, Jewish Care, in Golders Green, London. Working on behalf of the design and build contractor Bowmer and Kirkland, P+HS provided detailed design and production information for the social care facility on the significant 0.56 hectare site. The new Maurice and Vivienne Wohl campus provides high quality facilities for staff, volunteers and clients for working, living and visiting the site. It comprises of a 3,695sqm nursing and dementia care home for 54 people and a 5,150sqm 'extra care' apartment complex, which equates to 45 apartments for independent living, with care and support provided on site. Additional space includes 1,900sqm for office accommodation, including a help desk, social work teams, a computer centre for the disabled and a studio that records talking books. There's also 1,139sqm purpose built day centre with various communal facilities such as a hair salon, shop, arts & crafts room, library/ reminiscence room and an auditorium for communal gatherings and the celebration of religious festivals. Central to the development is a courtyard garden offering a protected and healing environment with trees, raised garden beds, seating and a 15m rill. Visitors entering the day centre are greeted with the vista of the garden and circulating water feature through full height glazing. The flagship campus is at the heart of one of London's largest Jewish communities. It has been designed to meet the changing needs of the older members of their community, providing a range of support and care options ranging from independent living through to high level residential care. The building achieved an excellent BREEAM rating, as it is designed to be energy efficient, and incorporates sustainable elements such as a brown roof, and biomass boiler.
