New Build
The Old Station , Station Road , Stokesley , North Yorkshire , TS9 7AB , United Kingdom
One of the first combined leisure and healthcare developments, Blaydon Leisure and Primary Care Centre delivers excellent healthcare and leisure facilities to the local community from a delightful building set in generous grounds. A collaborative project that involved two clients and two architects, the new energy efficient development determined to improve the wellbeing of the community. The choice of site rejuvenated the neighbourhood and enabled the running track and sports pitches of a defunct school to be brought back into community use, with the new facility bringing cohesion to the broader site, co-locating a gym and pool alongside community healthcare facilities. The centre is one of five projects developed as part of Gateshead Council’s ‘Building an Active Future’ programme and has been designed by P+HS Architects and S+P Architects working collaboratively for Willmott Dixon. The leisure centre includes a six lane 25 metre swimming pool and learner pool, as well as a gym. Additional changing rooms are also provided for outdoor sporting activities to take place. The complex Primary Care facility, designed by P+HS, includes minor injury walk-in unit, GP practice and extensive planned care facilities including services for breast screening, diagnostics, dentistry and physiotherapy. The building is one of quality, incorporating artwork, contemporary furnishings, colour, light and views out to gardens and green spaces, all designed to create a welcoming and non institutional feel.
