A training facility for newly qualified medical staff. Also used by external organisations. The clinical skills facility is situated in a the Ashley Wing, a Victorian terrace. The new scheme involved a complete refurbishment and reorganisation to provide facilities including training rooms, a dummy ward, observation room with one way glass for student role play and assessment, waiting rooms and offices. This was a complicated refurbishment project. In order for the main works to commence, four separate enabling projects had to be carried out first including asbestos survey and removal to allow a partial decanting of the building and phased works in the main building to begin. In order to produce an exemplar design P+HS staff accompanied the Trust to visit Derriford Hospital in Plymouth to review the recently completed unit there, considered to be one of the best in the country. The scheme has improved accessibility to and within the building including the provision of a new lift. Formerly a Nightingale Ward, the building required significant fire strategy works to bring it up to current standards. Although the development budget was limited there was opportunity to increase insulation at roof level reducing overall heat loss and energy use. The dedicated control room within the building allows remote monitoring of graduates as they treat the medical dummies which are remotely operated from the control room.
