Phi Architects developed a concept called MyPad (positive autism-friendly design) for parents of an autistic young man; to illustrate how a small community of neurodiverse residents could live together with different levels of support but firmly integrated into the wider community. The opportunity to build the concept was realised when a site was identified near his residential school for complex needs. As the young man was approaching the age when he could no longer access education, he would be rehoused in the community, hence his parents were very concerned about the lack of suitable living accommodation and feared their son would live alone with carers. This unique housing concept was constructed by Bloor Homes in collaboration with Stockport MBC and in partnership with MSV Housing Association and Lifeways, the care provider. The house provides fully adapted, independent living accommodation for young people with autism, learning difficulties and mental health issues. We are keen to work with autistic clients and families with autistic members to provide safe, suitable accommodation within the heart of communities.
