Winner of LABC Best Individual New Home 2019, One Acre located on the outskirts of the Lake District National Park is a highly bespoke and sustainable 5 bedroom, new build dwelling. The tailored design response was derived from extensive liaison and understanding of client requirements and aspirations to deliver a modern interpretation of a large traditional farm house. The internal layout promotes spatial flow for ease of wheelchair accessibility and allows specialist care equipment to be fully integrated into the internal fabric. A major design consideration was to utilise extensive glazed gables framed in Douglas Fir. By carefully positioning and orientating the property a distinct connection to the external landscape and scenic farmland beyond is achieved. A feature balcony not only allows usable external space and full appreciation of the views but also enables shelter for all year round use which ensures promotion of wellbeing and recovery. Due to the highly exposed and often somewhat hostile climatic environment of the site, the construction of the building was specifically designed to offer a sense of protection through its triple skinned walls and large wood burning stoves, one of which is dual facing to heat both the open plan kitchen and living area. A carefully restrained material pallet of locally sourced stone, Douglas Fir and slate and white plastered walls results in a modern design whilst emphasising traditional craftsmanship which helps enrich each of the spaces within the property. Quality of interior spaces was key to the clients brief and by utilising exposed hand-crafted structural timber framing to both the internal and a purposeful continuation to the external has resulted in a fully harmonised feature to the property. The meticulous construction detailing of the building allows the property to surpass current building regulations and with assistance of renewable energy sources allows a significantly reduced carbon footprint which achieved a highly commended air permeability rating and LABC award.
