Crick Road represents a new and innovative approach to dementia care. Inspired by the ‘Australian Butterfly Home’ dementia-care model, our project for Monmouthshire County Council is based on six individual ‘houses’ of eight residents each, centred around a dementia-friendly courtyard garden. Architecture and design are regarded as fundamental to the care provided, an architecture of possibilities for the residents and by way of a holistic culture change, allows the staff to seamlessly become fellow members of the household. The scheme is centred on all things familiar, from the mundane to the creative; aiding memory in day-to-day living; reinforcing personal identity, independence and active lives. Whilst shaping the physical environment is key to counter the impairments that come with dementia, our architecture is also that of opportunity, facilitating improvements in the practices and behaviours of staff, and enhancing the ways that those living with dementia are able to interact and experience the world they inhabit. The design input from staff and management has been substantial and the scheme development was presented at regular review sessions at the existing care facility (which is to be replaced). As such, we can be certain that the care home will do all it can to meet the aspirations of all those involved.
