Pentan has been exploring innovative and aspirational OSM and MMC approaches to housing construction for several years. Based on our winning design for the NaCSBA / Grand Designs’ Self Build on a Shoestring competition back in 2013, our concept of Barnhaus was utilised to deliver four new low-carbon homes in North Cornelly, South Wales for Valleys to Coast HA. Designed with a combination of steel and timber frames, and modest cladding to reflect the simplicity of agricultural buildings, Barnhaus makes use of straw bales and recycled materials for insulation, as well as PV to reduce electrical usage. With an EPC of A, the dwellings deliver exceptionally high levels of energy efficiency whilst tackling the challenging issue of fuel poverty.
