The Staff College at Sandhurst was built following pressure in the mid C19 to reform the British Army and to invest in officer training, as Britain had fallen well behind the levels of investment made by other great European powers. To improve this situation, Sir James Pennethorne was commissioned to design a Staff College in 1857, and construction was completed in 1862. The building was planned in a rectangular form around an open courtyard, with a central link between the two long elevations providing an entrance hall and the main staircase. The main elevation, facing west, has a 25 window front on three storeys, with four storey corner pavilions and a four storey bay with a pedimented aedicule over the central main entrance. The elevations are constructed of rusticated and channeled Bath stonework at ground floor level with yellow stock brickwork at the upper floors, with Bath stone window surrounds, and a heavy modillion and bracket cornice. In 1912, a fourth storey was added by replacement of the original slated pitched roof with a mansard roof incorporating dormer windows in its slated sides, and a flat lead roof. pdp Green Consulting is commissioned to undertake comprehensive repairs to the lead and slate roofing, chimney stacks, cast iron rainwater goods, timber windows and doors, and Bath stone and stock brick elevations of the building. The slate roofing and leadwork were originally poorly designed and detailed, allowing water to leak into the building for many years. The chimney stacks are badly weathered and will require considerable stone and brickwork repair, as will the building elevations, where built in downpipes have caused very serious damage. The rainwater goods require comprehensive repair and refitting, and the sash windows are to be repaired and redecorated.
