North Cornwall District Council appointed pdp Green for the regeneration of the historic wharf area, which is located at the sea entrance to the Bude Canal. This scheme consists of the restoration of existing historic buildings, the design and construction of new Craft/Workshop/Retail Units, and the redesign of hard landscape and roadways adjacent to the Wharf and between the Canal and River Neet. Landscaping and Roadway Works These works include the formation of 300m of roadway with pedestrian crossing points and pedestrian ways, a landscaping scheme with provision of 1750 plants and trees and public realm features incorporating the Bude Light sculpture. Sixty-four car parking spaces are being created. At Helebridge some two miles upstream of the sea lock, water based recreational pursuits will be encouraged by the provision of 22 car parking spaces, a mooring jetty for pleasure craft and a slipway to facilitate the launch of small boats. A footbridge is to be installed over the canal at this point to enhance the landscape and afford access to the footpath on the other side of the canal. An important aspect of the scheme is the provision of washing and sanitary facilities for the local fisherman. In addition, an Interpretation and Education Centre will be created within one of the historic buildings, and part of the remit for this will be to explain the local fishing industry to visitors, which is considered an important initiative for gaining wider support for its survival. Extensive consultation with approving Authorities and local communities aided design development. A number of presentations and seminars were required. We also provided support in application for grant from sources including Objective 1 and HLF. Bude Workshops This part of the project involved the design of a range of workshops for commercial letting by the client and a facility providing toilets and showers for visiting yachtsmen and fishermen, together with the refurbishment of the existing listed Bark House to form a further lettable workshop. The scheme was designed as a range of gabled elements sympathetic to the size and scale of neighbouring historic buildings, finished with cedar boarding, stone and rendered external walls, timber windows and doors and natural slate roofs. The Bark House was repaired using lime mortars, local timber and natural local rag slate roofing. Each unit is provided with its own sanitary and kitchen facilities, ready for tenants to occupy. Visitor Centre The existing TIC required extension to provide space for visitor and educational facilities, with additional office space at first floor level. The existing building had low floor to ceiling heights, and although built in the 1970?s it had a rather idiosyncratic structural steel system. In addition the site suffered a high risk of flooding. pdp Green provided an integrated architectural, structural engineering and water engineering service to assess the flood risk and develop a design that would enable the building to be extended cost effectively, and with adequate resistance to damage by any future flooding event. pdp Green also liaised with the interior designers chosen by the client to provide the fit out. The building contractor managed the project poorly but pdp Green worked with them to reduce delays to the minimum. The building was completed and opened on time and to budget.
