Brief This project was part of the second phase of an on going programme of extension and improvement of facilities for the School, following on from the Classroom extension designed and completed by the Practice in 2002. The brief included the relocating of the school Kitchen and provision of a dedicated dining area (Refectory) for 140 places in the existing listed ?chapel? block (Section I) and re-ordering of the existing kitchen area, assembly hall and adjacent areas to form a Creative Arts Centre (Section 2). It was envisaged that the Refectory would be used by pupils during the day, but may also be used in conjunction with the Creative Arts Centre for dining or buffets out of School hours, including art displays Solution Due to the floor area required it quickly became apparent that the building had to be extended. The siting of the extension was chosen both to recognise the pre-existence of a structure in this location, to give the refectory a presence at the entrance to the school, and to relate it to the enhanced seniors entrance. The new extension is simple in form and materials with a pitched ?slate? roof, which terminates just below the existing stone string course on the south wall. Internally the roof construction is exposed with a mix of traditional timber sections and modern stainless steel ties, the junction to the existing wall being as ?light? as structurally possible to clearly define existing and new. Along with the large extents of glass to the south elevation, allowing vies into the grounds, creates a light and airy, modern feel to the space. The relocation of the kitchen demanded a rationalised layout within the existing building and this entailed the removal of some internal walls, however the basic envelope of the building remained as existing and the fabric of both the original building and the existing ?poor? extension previously carried out were upgraded. The existing small first floor area allowed the location of Staff facilities and plant area with access via a new staircase. The completed refectory provides a dedicated facility at the heart of the school for the benefit of the children but also have a presence at the main approach to the school for use by community groups out of school hours.
