The Practice was appointed by International boat builders Fairline Boats to design new head offices. The Brief was for a building to house 150 staff, with room for expansion, together with visitor facilities. The building is designed on a core and office area principle to be flexible in layout to respond to the inevitable changes that are part of modern corporate life. The width of the building is set by the requirement to achieve natural cross ventilation, the ability to accommodate a mixture of enclosed and open plan office areas and reasonable column free spaces to provide flexibility. The bay spacing is set by a reasonable structural span and allowance for flexible office arrangements. The building is two storeys high with a flat roof and parapets to allow plant to be housed and hidden from view and safely accessible for maintenance. The entrance area core separates the visitor area from the general office areas and this separation is expressed in the fenestration treatment - the general office areas having strip windows to allow maximum flexibility, natural light and views, and the visitor/entrance area more extensive glazing to give a feeling of openness and space and to allow views through the building over the A605 to the landscape beyond.
