Within a Conservation Area
A grand historic site located in on the Northern edge of Newton Abbott. Careful consideration of landscape and retention of as many trees as possible has also embraced the charm of the site. One of three self-build plots carved from the grounds of a listed manor house. Bordered by an old stone wall– which once formed part of the estate– to the north, and with the potential to capture views beyond over open countryside. The massing of this 285-metre squared house was carefully articulated to enjoy the best aspects the site has to offer. The garage has been set away from the principal elevation, and a series of single story elements break up the volume of the building, meaning that this spacious detached home does not overwhelm the site. The most defining aspect of this project, the portico– which consists of a hand-crafted timber architrave. The chosen palette of exterior materials take cue from the houses context. The stone cladding, for example, is constructed out of the same materials as existing features on the site.
