Located just less than a mile south of Bellaghy, this historic listed grade B2 one and a half storey dwelling sits proudly by the roadside and has been fully restored by Patrick Bradley Architects and is a fine example of a rural Irish thatched cottage. The cottage dates back to circa 1830 however the exact date of construction is unknown. The dwelling is typical in form but rare in accommodation as it is a one and a half storey thatched cottage. The house is constructed of solid stone walls white washed and surmounted by a wheat straw thatched roof between cement skews with four squat chimney stacks. The rear of the dwelling was extended over time with the addition of a lean to scullery with a corrugated iron roof and another lean to extension was added to the south east gable of the house completed with a corrugated iron roof. The site features a cluster of outbuildings which are built of similar construction to the main dwelling complimented with corrugated iron roofing to match the lean to’s. A prominent feature which changed over time was the front boundary wall. This was initially a stone wall bounding the road, however was replaced and set back from the roads edge with a low timber ranch fence. To the rear were 3 Ulster pillars with traditional wrought iron blacksmith made gates serving purpose as a field gate and a garden gate. The last known renovations to the dwelling were in 2001 however the cottage was left in a state of near disrepair after the cottages thatched roof collapsed inwards and lay waterlogged for several years. It was hard to distinguish the ruins through the heavy vegetation that also claimed the site. The dwelling remained largely unchanged externally however the layout has been altered to allow for modern day living standards whilst retaining as many internal features as possible. All chimney openings were retained along with the low ceilings and door openings. The staircase had to be relocated to meet Building Control standards and the house now has internal bathroom spaces. The sash windows remained and were made good along with new timber boxes. The rear steel windows were replaced with double glazed sash windows to match the existing front windows. The cottage is deceiving with 4 double bedrooms, 3 bathrooms, kitchen / dining, living room, utility and store. The outbuildings of the cluster were all freshly painted with new doors to complete the building work. The original boundary block white washed wall was replicated at the roads edge and all existing wrought iron gates were made good and fixed to the wall. The landscape was also an item which defined the site as it is very exposed and clear to see from the public road. The gardens were fully restored back planting the same plants that were there using old photos for reference.
