The Gables is the reinterpretation of a former commercial compound comprising a mechanic’s office and garage, tucked away in a private courtyard behind a terrace of period properties in Primrose Hill, North London. Landlocked, the site presented an enormous challenge in the reuse of the original footprint, which has created a wonderful lateral two floor family home. The existing buildings have been radically transformed by completely rethinking the internal configuration, punching larger openings through the building envelope and introducing private courtyards. This draws natural light deep into the floor plates and enriches the new residential use. The client: "I believe Patalab's biggest achievement has been to demonstrate a clear design focus, whilst offering a fully functioning and comfortable home. Furthermore, I’m particularly pleased with the amount of natural light we’ve been able to draw into the spaces, given the introverted nature and limitations of the site."
