New Forest

Sited in AONB, Within a Conservation Area
1 Angel Courtyard , High Street , Lymington , Hampshire , SO41 9AP , United Kingdom
PAD studio designed all aspects of this development, the main home, working stables and workshop. Each element was carefully planned to foster dialogue and take advantage of the site. The designs were considered holistically, materials and finishes share in unity, enhancing cohesion. Two single storey rectangular forms shifted out of alignment create the main home, the units are connected by a removable glass walkway and a private decked area in-between which benefits from a southerly orientation. The home touches the ground lightly, with minimal impact, it floats above the landscape on steel piles creating a fully removable structure. Each unit was locally prefabricated off-site, delivered by truck and craned into position. Located in a National Park and a Conservation area, the clients could not have gained permission for a dwelling through the normal routes or through specialist planning policy such as PP79. However, the site had pre-existing permission for two mobile homes and as such the ambition was to create a contemporary, sustainable home that complied with the Caravan Act 1968 - redefining any preconceptions of this typology.
