The project came out of the Shelter “Architect In House” scheme. The family have a daughter whose disabilities may not be currently fully manifest, so they wanted a downstairs bed room and wet room with clear access for a wheelchair should it be needed. However, we designed a scheme that met the daughter’s needs as an almost incidental part of the project, as it was designed to meet all the family’s needs and as such everybody benefited. Thus it is a scheme that special needs is not differentiated but incorporated as part of everyday family living. The project was such a success that it received a highly commended in the LABC awards for the South West in the highly competitive Inclusive Design category.
