Span 4 and the Parcels Deck at Paddington Station, enclosing platforms 9 to 12 form a significant part of the Grade 1 listed London terminus station building. The structure had been hidden from public view since the mid 1990’s. Network Rail embarked on a £26m refurbishment project to restore the building and accommodate the technical requirements of a modern main line station. Oxford Architects were engaged by WSP to provide architectural design and heritage consultancy for the construction stage of the project, liaising closely with Westminster City Council, English Heritage, Morgan Ashurst and the lead consultant, WSP. Our key design components were platform surfacing, integration of major services distribution routes throughout the listed structure, lighting design, colour schemes, masonry cleaning, cladding and glazing packages and extensive safe maintenance access solutions. Due to the historic importance of the building, a schedule of heritage issues was discussed at every progress meeting with Oxford Architects tasked to close out actions and risks systematically during the course of the project. The project has been shortlisted in the British Construction Industry Awards 2012.
