This new Museum Building on two storeys provides permanent exhibition space for the SOFO collection, archive space and gallery space for temporary exhibitions. The building incorporates a multi function 'orientation' space called the 'briefing room' that can be used as a meeting and entertainment space, an audio visual display room or for temporary exhibitions. The layout of the building locates archive space with public exhibition and social spaces at ground and first floors. The first floor is designed with voids to allow ground floor galleries the facility to take large vertically orientated exhibits which are not possible to accommodate in the current museum galleries. The internal layout allows for a wide choice in routes through the galleries and adds an element of 'surprise' to the experience of visiting the building. This 'surprise' element is reinforced by the location of the lift and staircase to the first floor which both provide views out from the building over Woodstock on arrival at first floor. The building is also designed to allow a route around the garden so that it can be entered from either the east or the west and thus form part of a route that incorporates the Dinosaur garden and the Garden Galleries, making a visit to the Museum site a whole experience and incorporating the new galleries into the whole Museum easily.
