We were responsible for the design and implementation of the complete refurbishment of the former Old Library into a 715sqm fitness gym, changing its use from D1 to D2. The Grade II Listed building is located within the Bedminster Conservation Area on a prominent corner of Bedminster Parade and Regent Road. The building’s exterior has been preserved and made good. The existing pitched roof features a series of PV panels which generate energy to both heat and light the building. New full height glazing opens up the ground floor, activates the street and makes the façade more welcoming. The internal existing double-volume space has been fully utilised by introducing a new steel mezzanine floor on each level and creating a more interesting internal space and better circulation. The interior was given a ‘boutique’ look and feel by using different materials including timber wall cladding, dark grey metal and brass fixtures to reflect the ‘health’, ‘fitness’ and ‘strength’ elements of the gym. The heritage features were celebrated and emphasized by repainting, reusing and making good the existing timber flooring and shining discreet LED lights to the vaulted ceiling. The scheme received full planning approval and Listed Building and Conservation Area Consent. The refurbishment was successfully completed and the gym opened in Jan 2019.
