OWL has been involved with a series of differing projects at the Butter Market Shopping Centre ranging from the infilling of the Mall Atrium, to the fitting out of retail space and the construction of kiosk style units. The Mall alterations provide additional circulation space for accommodating market style units but also give greater visibility to the shops that surround the Atrium. Aside from the complexity involved with inserting a new floor structure, the existing lift lobbies required enclosure and an independent stair tower was constructed for fire separation. A water garden at the base of the atrium was removed to create a car wash facility and in all the works impacted on three levels of the building whilst the centre remained operational. A specialist fire consultant was involved to demonstrate the viability of the proposals in the context of the centre?s existing fire plan. A key component of the scheme was the structural solution to the infill floor which allowed the maximum flexibility of space, could interface with the existing structure and was able to be manoeuvred in a confined area. A series of cranked beams was proposed centrally supported by a single post with members extending down to the column positions of the floor below. In this way a regular arrangement of arms extend out from the ceiling at regular intervals around the drum. In addition, OWL's Partner's have undertaken shop fit-out works (with other practices) for bespoke outlets and Jackpot and Cottonfield shops at Bluewater.
