Community Enterprise Centre Bungay, Suffolk Scope: New Build, Sustainable Architecture Client: BBC / Coin Street Value: £2.0 million The proposal combines a new build community and business start-up facility on a site adjacent Old Grammar Lane to the south of Bungay town centre in Suffolk. OWL Architects conceived the building as two homogeneous and rectangular blocks clad in timber shingles with a predominantly flat roof incorporating a large raised dormer structure over the main hall. The footprints of the two elements are co-joined to limit the ‘spread’ of development and share common plant and a continuous envelope but have dedicated entrances. A key landscape feature of the scheme is the formation of earth mounding to the south of the community hall that creates natural enclosure for outside functions. Sustainable design was a requirement of the client’s brief and the centre is predominately naturally lit and ventilated and otherwise optimised to exploit natural daylight and solar gain.
