This new-build residential development in Victoria has been designed to mediate between the large-scale urban fabric to the north and the small-scale buildings to the south, forming a gateway building at the top of Strutton Ground to Victoria Street. Our design achieves an increase of four floors and three dwellings over the existing building and maximises the internal area of the retail and residential units. The use of brick refers to the many brick buildings in the area, and is also used to introduce tactility and patterning into the south-facing façade. The history of cultivation in the area was reflected in the local street names: Pear, Wood, Vine and Orchard; and this history is woven into the organic patterns created by glazed, recessed and perforated bricks. Glazed bricks will shimmer in the sunlight, as the light catches the façade.
