The Brief: Based in Malvern, Worcestershire, Essential Supply Products Ltd (ESP) is one of the leading independent manufacturers and converters of disposable tissue products in the UK. They supply products to wholesale distributors serving the Away from Home (non-consumer) market in the janitorial, hotel, restaurant, facilities management, catering, industrial and healthcare sectors. Having outgrown their current accommodation and seeking to support future growth, ESP approached One Creative Environments Ltd. (One) to assist them in producing a full planning application pack using a landscape-led design approach. In addition, One was appointed to produce the building services performance specification and manage the design and installation works on behalf of the client. Project Overview: The 19 acre site required a new, high quality and sustainable development which was modern but sympathetic to its surroundings and allowed the client to consolidate all operations and function more efficiently. It also permitted for expanded manufacturing capability, office space and an increased storage and distribution area. Using the aspiration of ESP and a heavily design-led approach, the development was driven by the outcome of a Landscape Visual Impact Assessment (LVIA) and proposals developed in direct response to the constraints and opportunities of the application site and its location close to the designated Malvern Hills AONB. Detailed analysis of the application site guided the siting of the buildings and layout, massing, orientation and materiality, as well as the arrangement of external spaces including car parking, flood alleviation and access roads. The design worked around veteran oak trees which each had tree preservation orders (TPO’s) in place and are fundamental assets of the site. Designed to emulate the Malvern Hills, the building itself sensitively considers its landscape while boasting a development with strong green credentials to support the client’s clear vision of sustainable future expansion and adding value to the local area.
