Listed Building - Grade II, Within a Conservation Area
As seen on Modern House. The restoration and conversion of a Grade 2 listed building, and its end-of-garden garage, located within Brixton Road Conservation Area. The project was for a young family with three small children and aging grandparents, who wanted to build a home that inspires large family gatherings, intimate dinners, work, and play for all. The project pared back the unsympathetic and unauthorised alterations made to the building over its lifetime, restoring its historic features and unusual symmetric open-plan form. An extension was built around a bespoke that wraps the junction between column and beam in an oversized toy-like bubble, a corner skylight to further dissolve the boundary between outside and in, and a fountain disguised as a gutter. A connected sequence of kitchen, dining, and garden rooms allows the parents to prepare meals whilst supervising their children and entertaining guests. On the opposite side of the hallway, a more private set of connected rooms form a snug, the adults’ study, and a bathing area for quieter moments in the day. The small end-of-garden garage was converted into a self contained annex for when extended family and guests come to stay, providing a retreat from the family’s busy daily lives. This doubles up as an additional space for quiet work, away from the main house, when needed.
