22 affordable, flexible, sustainable and lasting homes for London. OMMX won a competition to design 22 affordable homes for not-for-profit housebuilder Naked House. The pilot project is supported and funded by the Mayor of London because of its sustainable and innovative approach to conventional housebuilding. All the properties are to be sold for 20-30% discount from market cost. The homes have received planning permission and are due to start on-site this year. They are situated in three very challenging and constrained infill sites to the backs of people’s homes and are born out of socioeconomic and environmental crises. Naked House provides a financially accessible threshold to home ownership, by driving down the cost of acquiring land and building upon it. Each will start life as an affordable 1-bedroom property. However, they have been carefully designed with growth and adaptation in mind, so that future residents can easily adapt their homes in accordance with their changing housing needs. On top of regular planning permission, outline permission has been granted for the upward and outward extension of these properties, enabling them to meet Enfield Council’s policy requirement for family-sized homes, whilst also protecting future residents’ right to do so.
