The Clients approached Office Sian with the intention of reconfiguring the ground floor of their home to allow for a larger family room and kitchen. The Client?s wish to define separate cooking and storage areas for ?meat? and ?milk? food items, because of their Jewish faith, became a both a design challenge and an opportunity to create a functional yet unique space. The need to separate food became a key design generator, which led to the development of a design based upon the concept of ?movement and separation?. The brickwork allows for a conceptual ?splitting and separating? of openings. This was realised as new oak-framed windows which are shown in various states of ?movement?; either as ?just separating? or ?completely separated?. All of the windows have been detailed to incorporate hidden roller blinds within the framework. The low sill level and deep recesses allow for the younger members of the family to use these spaces as cubby-holes. A new underfloor heated floor, with an oak timber finish, utility room with separate sink, and a kitchen with walnut timber veneered cupboards complement the simple and clear aesthetic of the interior.
