New Build
Stratheden Intensive Psychiatric Care Unit (IPCU) is a purpose-built specialist care facility at Stratheden Hospital near Cupar in Fife. The eight-bed unit provides specialist care and treatment for patients experiencing acute psychiatric episodes. The building was designed by Oberlanders Architects in conjunction with Graham Construction. The unit was procured under Health Facilities Scotland Frameworks Scotland 2 programme, which principally focuses on new build and refurbishment within the acute health sector. The new facility’s patient-centred design emerged out of an intensive and extensive period of stakeholder engagement. The previous unit was housed within one of the original Victorian buildings on the hospital site. Postoccupancy evaluation has been extremely positive and it is evident that the new building has already had a significant effect on patients and staff alike. Nursing staff feedback has been that the new facility is “night and day” compared with the previous unit, in terms of its clinical facilities and overall environment. In terms of accommodation the design provides significant clinical benefits supporting recovery. The building features four separate courtyards, including an arrival courtyard, an outdoor activity space, a more reflective outdoor space for patients to withdraw to and a dedicated secure outdoor space for unsettled patients. Consideration has also been given to visitor access, including small children visiting parents or relatives who may be inpatients within the unit. There is patient access to an art and music room, a group therapy room, gym and a relaxation area. There is also a separate patient kitchen area and single bedrooms with en-suite shower rooms, allowing patients greater privacy, as do the furnished meeting rooms, one with its own courtyard, where patients can spend time with visiting friends and family. The Scottish larch rain-screen cladding on the outside of the building creates a softness and site sympathetic solution within its rural setting.
