Overview Project for Wiltshire Council to replace life-expired temporary buildings on an existing infant school site. The site is at the southern end of the town’s conservation area which includes the historic town centre. It is steeply sloping introducing significant access issues. Description The development is split into two parts with teaching provision located in a new block adjacent to the main road, and a new library building located toward the centre of the site. The new teaching block includes 4 new infant classrooms together with associated toilets, cloakrooms, and group teaching spaces. It is connected to the upper playground via a bridge-link / access deck running the full length of the building which provides a generous play space to each classroom. The block has two double pitch roofs running perpendicular to the slope creating a well proportioned elevation to the high street. The library is set on a pedestal which is accessed via a bridge from the new block and is designed to have the appearance of a ‘tree-house’. This is intended to make reading a fun experience for children and will include a generous picture window to the tree-canopy and playground below. NVB are also providing landscape design which makes use of the slope to create an amphitheatre, set into the hillside for whole school gathering and play.
