As part of Wiltshire Council’s Primary Capital Programme (PCP), 3 schools were identified for inclusion in the first wave of primary school replacements. St Mary’s School, Purton was identified as one of these schools due to a number of factors, including the split site nature of the existing institution. NVB subsequently developed a proposal for a 2 Form Entry Primary School to replace the existing 1½ Form Entry split site school. Extensive stakeholder consultation has been held with the following groups: Staff, Governors, Parish Council, Sport England, pupils and the local community. Integral to the process of designing the new school NVB instigated a design festival working with the pupils. The process was specifically designed to fully explore the thoughts and desires of the pupils, in relation to the design ot their new school and to ensure every voice was heard. The school has been designed in accordance with BB99, with a gross floor area of 2,260m². The accommodation is arranged over 2 storeys, as the site area is restricted. The building has 4 distinct zones, being main hall and kitchen, reception and admin, general teaching and staff areas. The clear separation of these zones enables clarity of use for the pupils and staff and the ease of separation of the various zones for community use. The building will be very sustainable, targeting BREEAM “Excellent”.
