NORR was the competition winner for the new Computing Information Services building on this prominent gateway site prominent on the City Campus West. The visually stunning contemporary addition relates well to the university’s existing Ellison buildings on the campus, both in its proportion and its use of high quality materials. The new building incorporates a Big Data laboratory and HPC facility, as well as a flexible 90-seat lab, gaming and animation labs, facilities for research and office accommodation for over 140 post graduates. Involving both a 2500m² new build extension and 1,000m² of refurbishment, the building also includes ancillary spaces such as a coffee shop, exhibition space and meeting rooms, and technical spaces for servers and IT support. The floorplans have been designed to allow maximum flexibility of use, so it is adaptable for changing course numbers and class sizes throughout its lifecycle. The extensive glazing and the addition of stainless steel woven mesh façade to the south, cuts out solar gain and introduces glare control. The building was designed to be as fully inclusive as possible and utilises external access from each level, DDA lifts within, induction loops, and high visual contrast as well as appropriate DDA signage and colour schemes. Designed and developed using BIM, including COBie, the 3D visualisations were used as an ongoing tool to assist client and stakeholders visualise the building as well as ensuring coordination of the mechanical and electrical systems for a seamless design.
