New Build
Percy House, 8th Floor , Percy Street , Newcastle upon Tyne , Tyne and Wear , NE1 4PW , United Kingdom
Following the successful completion of a £9 million Estate wide redevelopment completed in 2015, Northumberland College commissioned NORR to design a new Science, Technology, Engineering and Mathematics centre (STEM) on their Ashington Campus. The building features a large, open plan learning space, as well as cellular teaching accommodation as part of the 2-storey Block, was completed in July 2017. The overall design doesn’t just house STEM activities but integrates STEM elements to become part of the learning resource itself. The building features solar panels (P.V.) to the South; there are visual displays of the energy generation and usage. The structure and services are deliberately exposed within the main spaces to demonstrate and celebrate the workings of the building which is a visual demonstration to a range of courses on offer. The college run bricklaying courses and so the outside skin of the building is also used to demonstrate alternative bond methods and styles. The building has been designed to allow maximum flexibility and so it can be modified easily to accommodate a wide range of subjects and therefore adapt and respond to natural changes in curriculum subjects and their associated learning environment requirements. The structure and services within the main spaces have been deliberately left exposed to demonstrate and celebrate the inner workings of the building, as a visual demonstration to and representation of the subjects taught within. For example, the college runs bricklaying courses so the design demonstrates various bond methods and styles to showcase interesting aspects of bricklaying to participating students.
