The house is situated in London, within an area of Victorian three storey houses, arranged over a split level. The client approached us to improve the sequencing of the ground floor accommodation and to enlarge the kitchen facilities to include living and informal dining space. Our proposal takes the form of a substantial, double-height addition within the side return, with three metre tall glazed doors through to the living room, an expansive rooflight and glazed sliding doors to the rear. The low-ceilinged, more intimate space of the kitchen itself is contrasted against this new vertical volume, which forms a visual corridor from living space to garden.
