The project represents a contemporary approach to the redevelopment and extension of Monkton School's music teaching and performance facilities on a landscaped setting in the south-west corner of the school campus. The 'u-shaped' plan utilises the existing stone-walled 2-storey structure to provide 12 practice suites, teaching and ancillary rooms that wrap the new full-height orchestra-sized rehearsal hall placed at the centre. The new double-height entrance hub separates this from 3 state of the art recording studios, that offer variable facilities for learning the technical skills associated with both performance and recording. An exceptional and high technical specification for acoustic insulation and performance quality is central to the design and these are achieved using practical, imaginative and low-cost robust solutions. The insulation and ventilation strategies future-proof the facility, together with consideration for a substantial pv array on the flat rehearsal hall roof.
