Listed Building - Grade II*, New Build
This project was for Red Rose Chain Film and Theatre who in 2011, took up residence at Gippeswyk Hall, a 16th century grade II* listed building. Our proposals saw the demolition of a temporary 1960's pre-fab building to the rear of the red brick hall. In its place was built a new barn like studio theatre and ancillary accommodation linked to the hall by a single storey flat roofed foyer that creates distinction between old and new build. Changing and green room facilities are provided to the rear of the barn and the theatre interior materials have been left in their stripped back state creating a working environment for rehearsals and set building. The perimeter curtaining can be drawn to create a black-out setting for performances. There are eight different options for stage location and audience seating providing optimum flexibility within the one space. Repairs were carried out to the hall externally and internally minor alterations were carried out within the 19th Century addition to form a kitchen and a bar area. Nicholas Jacob Architects worked in conjunction with Charles Curry Hyde LLP and the project benefited from a Heritage Lottery Fund grant. It won a RIBA Suffolk Design award in 2015 and received a commendation from the RICS in 2016.
